Graduate Management Admission Test

The most competitive business schools require applicants to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test with math problems, grammar questions, and reading passages that challenge even English-mother-tongue graduates of American colleges.

What is on the GMAT?

The GMAT begins with an hour-long essay-writing test, followed by a 75-minute Quantitative section and a 75-minute Verbal section. The Quantitative section includes standard multiple-choice math problems as well as a unique question type called Data Sufficiency. The Verbal section has three question types: Sentence Correction questions, which test your understanding of English grammar and style; Critical Reasoning questions, which test your logic and analytical ability; and Reading Comprehension questions, which test your reading ability.

The Computer-Adaptive GMAT

Section 1: Analytical Writing 2 essays, 60 minutes
Section 2: Quantitative 37 questions, 75 minutes
Section 3: Verbal 41 questions, 75 minutes

How is the test scored, and what score do I need?

GMAT scores are reported on a scale of 200 to 800. For some business schools the GMAT is largely a formality, and in these cases a score in the 500's (just above average) may be enough. If you want to be taken seriously by a top-ranked MBA program, however, you must do much better than average. If you are applying to a "top-50" school, you should aim for a GMAT score over 600. If you are applying to a "top-10" school, you should aim for a score over 700.

Is the test hard?

Yes, the GMAT is hard. The Quantitative section is challenging, especially if you have been out of school for some time, or if you have never done math in English. Some Quantitative questions are tricky and convoluted math problems. Others are quite abstract and theoretical. The Verbal section is difficult even for college-educated native English speakers. If English is not your first language, the Verbal challenge is compounded. But what makes the GMAT really hard is the time pressure. Many test takers run out of time. You have to be quick and clever to get through each section with plenty of right answers in the allotted time.

How does the EAS preparation course work?

The GMAT course is 30 hours of instruction, available on three different schedules. You can come to class two evenings a week for six weeks. Or you can come six consecutive Saturdays. Or, if you want to get the whole course in just three weeks, you can come evenings and Saturdays. The course begins with a diagnostic test to measure your initial level and identify particular areas of strength and weakness. In class you will get a thorough review of essential concepts, and more important, you will acquire a complete battery of test-taking techniques and strategies. You will learn the math jargon, formulas, and rules of grammar and style you need to know for the test, as well as problem-solving methods, guessing tools, and time-saving strategies that will enable you to convert what you know into top scores.

I was thoroughly satisfied. Bob, the instructor, manages to transform GMAT questions into a sort of “sports challenge.” I was never bored at his lessons; in fact I learned to make the best of my logical capacities and to face the examination with tranquility. Bob approaches the questions rigorously and he provides very useful methods; at the same time he is always ready to point out shortcuts, so valuable in a timed test!

Bob’s lessons exceeded all my expectations. The distinguishing factors were the preparation materials, the best and most vast that one will find, and Bob himself, who provided the keys for reading the test, identifying the “tricks,” and accelerating the response time.

Bob gets you into the “mentality” of the GMAT...His didactic material remains the best that I have used, including in approximately 200 concise points just about all the essential math and grammar notions. He teaches you secrets for confronting with speed questions that would otherwise be extremely difficult. Finally, he teaches with enthusiasm. With Bob you learn while having fun, and the GMAT is transformed into a beautiful challenge that manages to bring out the best in you.

Bob’s lessons...gave me a much better understanding of the structure of the exam and the best way to study and practice than would have been possible reading one of the many books on the subject. Bob’s hints enabled me to develop the right mental attitude...Without Bob’s help it would have been impossible to achieve such a satisfactory result.
